- 자신의 가장 큰 적은 자아입니다. 자신을 잃는 것이 가장 큰 손실입니다.
- 오만은 가장 큰 패배입니다. 자기 비하는 가장 비참한 일입니다.
- 자비와 무상에 대한 인식이 마음에서 생기는 것이 가장 큰 선물입니다.
그러므로 아난다, 내가 세상을 떠난 후에는 교훈을 당신의 섬으로 삼고, 당신만의 섬으로, 다른 어떤 의지 없이 스스로의 피난처로 삼으십시오.
독립된 자에게는 동요가 없습니다. 동요가 없으면 평온이 있습니다. 평온이 있으면 편향이 없습니다. 편향이 없으면 오는 것도 가지는 것도 없습니다. 오는 것도 가지는 것도 없으면 사라지고 다시 나타나는 것도 없습니다. 사라지고 다시 나타나는 것도 없으면 이 세상도 저 세상도 없으며 그 둘 사이도 없습니다.
이것이 바로 고통의 끝입니다.

가장 지혜로운 말조차도 먼 곳의 해안에 도달하기 위한 뗏목과 같으며, 계속 붙잡고 있는 것이 아니다. 오직 불구속의 법만이 진정한 법이다.
