Uitmuntendheid is geen daad, maar een gewoonte.
Daarom zeg ik tegen jullie allen, Ānanda: "Blijf deze goede praktijk die ik heb opgericht volgen. Wees niet mijn laatste persoon."
- De grootste vijand is het ego. Het grootste verlies is zichzelf verliezen.
- Arrogantie is de slechtste nederlaag. Zelfkritiek is het meest beklagenswaardige.
- Mededogen en bewustzijn van vergankelijkheid in de geest zijn de grootste geschenken.
Dus Ānanda, nadat ik ben overleden, laat de leer je eiland zijn, leef als je eigen eiland, je eigen toevlucht, zonder andere toevlucht.
Voor de onafhankelijke is er geen opwinding. Wanneer er geen opwinding is, is er rust. Wanneer er rust is, is er geen neiging. Wanneer er geen neiging is, is er geen komen en gaan. Wanneer er geen komen en gaan is, is er geen sterven en heropstanding. Wanneer er geen sterven en heropstanding is, is er geen deze wereld of wereld daarbuiten of daartussen.
Dit is het einde van lijden.

"Mahā" means great, surpassing. "Kāla" means time, darkness, emptiness. Mahākāla transcends time and space.
- An incarnation of Mahāvairocana Buddha embodies the quality of destruction.
- An aspect of Shiva dissolves everything back into the primal Void.
- Deep blackness represents the absence and complete dissolution of all phenomena.
Mahākāla, fierce and destructive, devastates all of nature and even deities; this represents the Age of Destruction and Emptiness, where time and space are almost beyond conception.
